Authors: Ben Robart
For my B324 GCSE Portfolio coursework I have selected Brief 3 to complete and I shall be working alone to complete all elements of the work.
3. A print based advertising campaign for a new product, such as a new clothing range, to include a brand name design, two full page magazine advertisements and a billboard poster, using original photography.
I have selected Brief 3 because it interested me more than any of the other briefs. The only other brief I considered doing was Brief 5.
5. A music promo video, with a storyboard. The length of the promo will reflect the length of the music track, but it is expected to be no longer than three minutes.
However, I decided that doing Brief 3 would suit me more, as I like experimenting to get different effects in Photoshop.
After close study of the Brief it became clear that there were a number of elements to consider. I had to decide what product I was doing. I chose that I would make adverts for a new game.
In order to create a convincing set of products I began a course of primary research.
Firstly, I looked at adverts for recent games, and looked at common elements. They were in quite a basic format, with the name and image of the game standing out the most.
Secondly, I selected a small group of key texts for closer analysis under the headings of: format; content; style; audience; representation and institution. The game adverts I chose to closely analyze were Grand Theft Auto IV, Final Fantasy XIII and Battlefield Bad Company 2.
This research process proved useful because it gave me a greater insight into how games are advertised.
My concept:
Having completed my research I now have a clear idea about the nature of my own product. I intend to create a brand name design, two full page magazine advertisements and a billboard poster for a first person shooter game coming out in the near future.

3 Sample Texts
While doing this project, I will be using 3 sample texts.
One will be from a magazine, one will be from a billboard, and one will be a poster.
I still need to decide which magazines and adverts I will use.

Correction
Sorry, I forgot to mention what Brief 3 actually is. I also considered doing Brief 5, although I decided not to as I am more interested in Photoshop CS5 Extended than I am in iMovie or Windows Movie Maker.
Brief 3 is: A print based advertising campaign for a new product, such as a new clothing range, to include a brand name design, two full page magazine advertisements and a billboard poster, using original photography.
Brief 5 is: A music promo video, with a storyboard. The length of the promo will reflect the length of the music track, but it is expected to be no longer than three minutes.
If I had done Brief 5, I would have done a promo video for Radiohead's track, "Creep", although the track is around four minutes long and not three. As I mentioned above, it also did not interest me as much as Brief 3.

Initial Proposal
I will be working by myself, and I would like to complete Brief 3, by myself using Photoshop CS5 Extended and Microsoft Word 2007. I have selected this brief because if interests me the most, as I love using Photoshop and creating and editing images. I plan to make an advertisement campaign for a product that I still need to decide on. I will be using magazines, newspapers and billboards in Central London as my key texts I will study for research analysis. I will need to experiment in Photoshop to see which different effects I can get out of it, such as a blurred effect or an anti colour effect. I will be creating both magazine and billboards for a new action first person shooter game, using adverts from Battlefield Bad Company 2, which is in this genre, Grand Theft Auto IV, which is in the third person action genre, and Final Fantasy XIII, which is a third person action role playing game.
Initial Proposal Brief
Initial Proposal
Purpose: to decide upon the Brief you wish to complete and plan the next stage of research
After having considered ALL the Briefs thoughtfully you will have:
• formulated a shortlist of options
• undertaken some basic research into the viability of the Brief
• undertaken some basic research (form, content, style) into the nature of each of the elements of production
The next stage is to plan the work you will need to do in advance of the production stage:
• Select a range (minm. 3) of real texts to deconstruct for each of the production elements
• Identify any technical elements that need to be researched/experimented with
In this initial proposal you must:
• State clearly the brief you wish to complete and who is in the group
• Explain why you have selected this brief
• Explain what each of the elements of your selected brief will involve
• Discuss your initial thoughts about the genre/content/style – what you plan to make?
• Identify (name) your key texts (minm. 3) to be studied for research analysis
• Identify any areas for technical research/experimentation
• Create a timetable (tasks & completion dates) for your research and experimentation
